The Papa John's Storm Eva Bandman Halloween Cross race will give the cyclocross scene this year's first glimpse of the 2013 World Cyclo-cross Championship venue this weekend. While Sven and Bart haven't signed up for Storm Eva Bandman yet, with some great prizes at stake, maybe we'll see a Belgian or two in costume.
The 2013 UCI World Elite Cyclo-cross Championships powered by Exergy, held on Feb. 2-3, 2013, at Eva Bandman Park, will be the first time the 60-year-old event has been held outside of Europe. Tickets for the historic event can be purchased online at www.Louisville2013.com.
The seeds of both Storm Eva Bandman and Louisville 2013 were planted at an upstart race called Storm the Greens in 2005, which joined the Ohio Valley Cyclo-Cross (OVCX) Series a year later.
"We've grown from a handful of locals who showed up in 2005 to more than 500 riders from all over Ohio Valley. The greats of US cyclo-cross have laid tracks at Eva Bandman - Compton, Gould, Nash, Powers, Johnson, and Trebon. It will be great to see the international great - Nys, Albert, Wellens, Pauwels, and hopefully Stybar - race here for the Worlds in 2013." said race promoter Bob Bobrow.
The growth of the Storm Eva Bandman mirrors the growth of the racing scene in the United States which saw the number of cyclo-cross racers increase 208 percent from 2005 to 2011 according to USA Cycling.
Racers in the 24 youth, adult and masters cyclo-cross races will be challenged by many of the features available at Eva Bandman Park with its scenic views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River.
"Storm Eva's course is challenging, super fun to race, and great for spectators." added Bobrow. "This is a build-it-and-they-will-come course that features a stone-step run up, a railroad-tie-step run up, a couple of hair-raising drops, cambered grass sections, wooded trails, sand, and a centralized road section for a World Championship-feel finish."
Don't forget your costume. Held on Sunday, October 28, the 7th Annual Papa John's Storm Eva Bandman Halloween Cross doubles as a Halloween Party. Only one rule to follow, no capes!
