American Danny Summerhill shares his memories of racing at the UCI World Cyclo-cross Championships. His first time as a junior in 2006, Summerhill finished 19th with teammate Bjorn Selander taking 7th. Then, the following year he claimed silver at Hooglede, Belgium, after crashing out of the front group on a steep descent with one lap to go and battling back.
In all, Summerhill raced in five World Cyclo-cross Championships, twice as junior (2006, 2007) and three times as an under23 (2009, 2010, 2011). After starting on the third row in 2011, Summerhill flatted out of the lead group on the third lap and quickly dropped back to 27th spot. He chased back to finish 13th.
Only a few Americans have ever won medals at the World Cyclo-cross Championships - and only one has won - Matthew Kelly in 1999 won the Junior Gold Medal in Poprad. Other medalists include Tim Johnson (bronze, 1999 U23); Katie Compton, Jonathan Page and Danny Summerhill (Silver medals ALL, 2007); Katie Compton (Bronze, 2009/10; Silver 2010-11).
